PostSubject: Sources Relating to Moscoso's Route   Thu 17 May 2007, 2:28 pm

Hello everyone ...

Some years ago, I happened to have the opportunity to browse through a book which concerned the early exploration routes through Texas, and included a chapter which elaborated in much detail on a potential 'trail' for Moscoso. This book may have been published by UT Press, but I cannot recall its title or the author's name.

Does anyone happen to know which book this might be, or be able to pass along any other sources relating to this potential, early 'North-Texas' visitor?

Many thanks,
Holly

I have on good advice that this volume is, 'Old Texas Trails,' by J W Williams (Eakin Press, 1979).

I remember it as an excellent and detailed study of numerous routes through early Texas.

I have never researched this before....but I did find this on the Southwestern Historical Quarterly Online:

It's about the expedition and has a map.

Cee Cee ... hey, girl!

No, I hadn't read that article, and thanks. There are so many journals and articles available online now that it is quite amazing; a true luxury. I don't think I'll ever get used to the digitized abundance and often forget.

I was thinking about posting a section devoted to links here, and will be sure to include the 'Southwestern Historical Quarterly.'

I haven't delved very deeply into the routes taken by explorers in early Texas, but always have wanted to.

Finally located an early thread contributed to by Fred Ragsdale and Gerald Harris on the DHS message board. As Fred conveyed there, it is very difficult to pipoint the exact course taken by these determined individuals, and much disagreement amongst those who think they have a good idea. Be that as it may, it is fascinating to speculate!

I haven't tracked down his sources, but Daniel E. Fox, in 'Traces of Texas History: Archeological Evidence of the Past 450 Years,' (Corona, 1983; p.55) places Moscoso's path further to the west than have most researchers -- potentially passing through the Dallas/Fort Worth vicinity. If I remember correctly, Jesse W. Williams (if he was indeed the author of the study sought above) did as well.

I thought that I would transfer links to the maps provided by Fred on the DHS board back in 2002. Here they are:

Thank you, Fred.

And thank you, Miss Cee Cee. Please let us know if you discover anything else concerning this subject.
