| My family has stuck pretty close to our home in recent years, but I would suggest San Antonio and its missions, followed by Goliad and the historic lighthouses of the Texas Gulf Coast. These might be combined into a single trip, and the latter two most assuredly can be.
Probably the best place to browse online in advance of a Lone-Star vacation is 'Texas Escapes':

Also, the office of Texas tourism offers a thick and wonderful free guide to exploring our vast land (the richest of any such guide produced by the other states ... truth be told) ~

| | Going on field trips is one of the best ways for kids to learn about history. We haven't been to the forts either but I know my boys and Frank would love to se them. |

| Good, San Antonio would certainly be on my map. The more temperate areas appeal to me as well, any suggestions?
Keep in mind that a US trip for me would be several years in the future.
Thanks, you're a charm. |

| Oh My. I'll just speak plainly as I am not so intelligent as to know any other way. Temperate and San Anton’... I'm not seeing that as much more than an oxy moron. You poor thing you've been mislead. Texas has no truly temperate areas. We only had two days of spring this year. You get yourself down around San Anton' and that is where the heat crushes the breath from you like a python. I've said this before and it still holds true: It's so immeasurably hot you'd think things would spontaneously combust but the humidity is even greater so things begin to melt like a Salvador Dali painting, which is why Longhorn cattle have such a forlorn droopy look about them, they're melting. Poor things. Turkey vultures circle everywhere waiting to swoop upon poor creatures succumbing to the heat. This place is a hell vent I tell ya, you can even smell brimstone burning. Or maybe it's the smell of burning concrete, I haven't figured out which. Otherworldly it is.
They say Texans are given to exaggeration, but this is no lie my friend, it is HOT here. Plan your trip for March or November so that you miss the piercing winter winds and the hellish heat. One can find history anywhere. Perhaps you would enjoy the caves around the Brazos? I'm not sure but I don't think you have that sort of adventure on your side of the pond. You are always welcome to enjoy my trees in Gilmer if you wish. Gilmer has a fair share of Texas history to it. Still use the old town square and everything. No buildings so old as those you are blessed with, but, old for Texas. I am fortunate as to have some of the remaining ancient pines on my little spot out there. It's very peaceful. |

| | And about that trip of yours, I say, shoot from the hip and share it with a friend. Plan too much and you'll miss the magic. We'll take care of you, just tell us when your plane lands. |

| First off, thanks for proving the friendship for which Texans are known. I have no fears of the sun but neither do I refuse any shade were it offered. Not knowing different I might mistake your words being of North Africa.
I took this image from you batch because it looked as if the guy was visiting Texas on vacation.
My dream I suppose would be to bed at a working ranch but I wouldn't share this with anyone but you.
Haven't you any cowboys on your list of funnies?

| | Not knowing exactly what you are wanting in the way of history, I will suggest Collin County, Texas as a place to visit. Several museums to see in different towns and just a nice place in my opinion. Try "http://collincountystation.com/tourism.html" for a bit of a look around. |
