Much of his work seems to be of the historical fantasy genre rather than of pure historical fiction (whatever that may be), but the landscape and milieu of his native state is said to have permeated his books. Has anyone read the novels of Robert E. Howard? I never had heard of him till recently, though I surely had of Peaster, Texas and Conan the Barbarian Cool Anyway, here are some web-pages relating to this Texan and his writing:

http://www.conan.com/

It's amazing how long some can walk through life unawares of the things that matter.
