PostSubject: The Lake Worth Monster   Sun Mar 09, 2008 3:36 pm

Anyone seen him (it?)? Anyone care to?

I would have thought this creature to be on the order of Scotland's Nessie ~ sleek and even graceful as she coursed and dipped through dark waters. But no: Lake Worth (Tarrant County) seems to host a beastie far more loathsome and reprehensible .... a creature of matted fur and cloven hoof which inhabits the wooded shorelines of the lake and its island(s) ... in contrast to the persistent, aquatic (through likely cold-blooded) personage of Loch Ness. Could it be that we, in Texas, have a living gargoyle on our hands .... while Scotland possesses the last of the dragons?

You be the judge.

... with much more to be found online, though consisting mostly of duplications, as well as a bound study having been written by Sallie Ann Clarke

Might anyone have further information regarding Greer Island?

Regarding Lake Worth herself ~ the body is one of the oldest (if not the oldest?) man-made reservoirs in the state, having been impounded in 1914. Its shores once hosted a grand casino and amusement park:

... and a 'Nine Mile Bridge' yet extends o'er the lake's lapping waves, I believe ~

But surely it is not so very long?

And there have been numerous calls over the years for Lake Worth's receiving a fresh start. Evidently, she soon might find her needs finally attended to .... along with those of her fish and the various and sundry creatures whom she may shelter alien pale :

Well my mom is from Ft. Worth. I'll see if she's ever heard of the Lake Worth monster and see what she has to say about Abilene and western Texas Very Happy Or maybe I'll save these for conversation starters at our next family get together.

Please let us know how that goes over, Gaston cat

And perhaps, the Nine Mile Bridge received its name because it turned what would have been a nice-mile jaunt around the lake into a a mere one-fourth mile glide across (hopefully) placid waters?

Nice roller coaster to be seen there in the distance ... reminiscent of 'Judge Roy's Scream' at Six Flags Over Texas pale Razz

And another, apparently slighter bridge, extending off to the left ...

I don't think my mom was a hippie but she could be hiding something. Her summer of love produced me. Very Happy I'll let ya know how the conversation goes though. July 4 is looking like the date.
