This coming Saturday, September 15, the Wise-County town of Bridgeport -- recently honored as a Texas Main Street City -- will remember and celebrate an important part of its past in the Coal Miner's Heritage Festival. Originally a stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail, and named for its early toll bridge which linked the banks of the West Fork of the Trinity River, the mines surrounding this historic town were heavy producers of bituminous coal from the 1880s until the late 1920s.
