| This coming Saturday, September 15, the Wise-County town of Bridgeport -- recently honored as a Texas Main Street City -- will remember and celebrate an important part of its past in the Coal Miner's Heritage Festival. Originally a stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail, and named for its early toll bridge which linked the banks of the West Fork of the Trinity River, the mines surrounding this historic town were heavy producers of bituminous coal from the 1880s until the late 1920s. Following are some links to pages detailing Bridgeport's mining heritage, and a summary of its history provided by its Chamber of Commerce : http://www.bridgeporttxhistorical.org/Pages/Bridgeport%20Coal%20Mines.html http://www.bport.com/aboutbridgeport.htm _________________ The woman of the frontier made the best of her situation, for she had developed a respect for the land that gave her freedom as well as the courage to live in it. ~~~ from the perspective of Anne Seagraves |
