This former Masonic Hall in Rhome now is serving as a real estate office. I will try to provide a bit of the building's history soon.

PostSubject: Friendship Baptist Church   Sun 29 Jul 2007, 9:47 pm

This little Baptist church in rural Wise County is independent, fundamental, and it a "place where everybody is somebody." I hope to learn more of its history soon, but in the meantime, here is the link to information about its peaceful cemetery, which lies across the road, as well as some other lovely photos:

The joined post oak trees certainly speak of friendship!

Down a little country road in Wise County, its memories look to be well-kept by its committed congregation.

Here is an old pulpit of Garvin Church, which is still used for tabernacle services:

Here are the lovely woods which close around the church:

PostSubject: Deep Creek   Mon 30 Jul 2007, 7:26 pm

It's just a typical little Texas creek, with a sandy bottom and banks rising sharper than most. But as it leveled out to the east, it was perhaps near here that Sallie Bowman watered her horses and close by that Sam Woody -- a man comfortable with bearing the burden of 'firsts' (his father built the first house in Parker County and his sister and her husband were the first civilian citizens of Fort Worth *) -- raised the first log cabin in Wise County. Does this look like it wood have been a good place to hang a rope swing or are the creek banks altogether too wide? The second possibility gets my 'yea' but you be the judge Wink

Lots of poison ivy down there for sure ("leaves of three, let them be ....")!

* 'Day Trips In and Around Dallas,' by Laura Trim (1984) Thanks forever, Laura!

PS. This photo looks pretty funky when loaded here .... sorry Neutral

Here stands the once-grand Brown Hotel, located in quaint and lovely Chico, Texas. I recall when the structure was placed on the real estate market in 1996 ~ already quite dilapidated though clothed in plain white in those days. And from what I was told, the present owner has no plans to come to its rescue in the near future. The 'near future' is probably all that the old place has left to it .... for sure and for certain.

Still, visiting the old Brown -- walking amongst its weeds and brick piles and broken windows -- one can't help but to get a sense of the bustle which it must have known in the early years .... and of the many meals served to grateful travelers from its wood-stove kitchen.

Melancholic.

Its marker provides a little push to dig deeper into Texas history, wouldn't you say?

The Brown Hotel is representative of the many hotels which once served the small towns across our state .... most now gone to the elements, the economy, indifference and neglect.

Here are some more photos taken of the Brown Hotel -- by the camera of 'old.curmudgeon' and posted to Flikr:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/old-curmudgeon/1253518135/

I prefer these, as they portray the old hotel in a mild and abundant season, whisked by the leafy branches of sheltering pecan trees.

While these trees likely are younger than the building, they may have been preceded by others. At any time of year, the ground is covered with their fruits .... and the visitor is led to wonder whether cooks at the Brown Hotel once were famous for their pecan pies cat

PostSubject: Old Bank Building, Chico   Fri 06 Jun 2008, 1:23 pm

This wonderful old sandstone bank building, in Chico, now serves as an antique shop. I'm not sure whether the iron step might have been forged in Gainesville, Florida ( http://www.gainesvilleironworks.com/ ) or whether there might have been an iron-works at Gainesville, Cooke County, during the late nineteenth century. The cage seen within the bank building is original to the First State Bank in Forney (Kaufman County), and was salvaged as a focal piece for this quaint business.

A former filling station, perhaps?
