PostSubject: Sunday Drives   Sun Apr 06, 2008 1:26 am

Does anyone still take them? I know that gas prices are sky-high, and lots of folks need to rest on the weekends .... and that many drivers don't stop to see the flowers ~ much less to smell them, these days ....

But, my grandfather always spoke of the "Sunday Drive."

He had been a cab-driver in Dallas after World War II came to a close and, through unanimous testimony of our family, savored his time behind the wheel. My grandmother, by contrast, drove only when life mandated the activity. She boycotted US 75, when it was put in, and continued to patronize the green-and-white (?) Dallas buses, with their friendly banners and reliable routes.

But she and my grand-dad regularly took a relaxing drive 'of a Sunday.'

From the little that I have seen and read, such a tradition seems to reach back into horse-and-buggy days. Nowadays, Saturdays -- or, any day -- might be grafted into the 'Sunday drive.'

When I was growing up my parents went on as many Sunday drives as possible. We always got off "the beaten path" and drove backroads to small nearby towns of Dallas. I LOVED it. I carried on the tradition when my kids were born and now that Tom is retired the "Sunday" drive can be any day of the week. Tom loves that small town diners that you have in the other section because they are the mom and pop places that are sadly dying out.

We love seeing all the wildflowers that Lady Bird has so beautifully reminded us all of and if I don't get to go see the Bluebonnets and Paintbrushes in Ennis I throw a fit.....hah

I think it's a new tradition to start, even if it's just every few months you can go.
