| Below is a lovely postcard view of the San Antonio Post Office, and a link to the article in the 'Handbook of Texas Online,' which chronicles the life and achievements of its architect, James Riely Gordon. The back of the card reads as follows: "THE POST OFFICE is one of the finest Federal buildings in the South-west. The style may be called Richardson Romanesque [shades of Dallas County's 'Old Red' Courthouse] with a touch reminding one of Lombardy and the South of France. Notice the tower and the bold angle turret. The building affords accommodation for the for the Federal Court and Customs offices as well as the Post Office. It was built at a cost of 275,000 Dollars." At some point, the tower and turret of the old San Antonio post office were lost or removed, as can be seen at the photo posted to this website: http://www.city-data.com/picfilesv/picv16272.php Here, also, is a link to the website of someone who carries on a love affair with both post offices and postcards: http://home.earthlink.net/~ggghostie/postoffices.html http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/GG/fgo30.html

| You all, the more that I compare the photos of the post office as is seen here with modern images -- said to be the 'old' San Antonio post office -- the less assured I am that they are taken of the same building. Granted, public structures are known to have been greatly modified so as to keep step with the styles of the times (the Collin and Titus County Courthouses being just two examples). So ... it certainly is possible that the post office received an overly-thorough renovation. But is anyone knows for sure, please do pass the word along.
Thanks!
