| I suggest that the French claim was so tenuous as to be risible -and LaSalle's attempt to vindicate was both risibly minor and tragic (for all involved, including LaSalle).
Others may feel differently - and have reasons. If they do, please post - there are bases for discussion, I think. |

| Clyde ... that is my perspective, too. The French 'claim' to Texas was fragile and brief (1685 - 1690), and a government was never put into place.
Now I'm wondering and trying to remember about a couple of things. What of French trade extending into East Texas? I'd also be interested in knowing when the concept of the 'six flags over Texas' became prominant in state (or in the Republic's?) consciousness. Surely it predated the amusement park
Thanks!

| Actually - have to admit the Spanish thought enough of the French claim (or were sufficiently concerned about having a French fort/settlement within Texas) to send an expedition to expel the French from the fort LaSalle established. Proved, of course, unnecessary as they Frogs had jumped by teh time the Spanish arrived.
The French from Louisiana (and later the Spanish in Louisiana) and those in East Texas traded regularly, but the matter was pretty regulated. Had to have a license (even when Spain controlled both areas0 and all that. Not that there wasn't a lot of smuggling, both ways...
Teh Six Flags thing - I'm not sure of, but the amusement park swiped the idea which was already existing.
Nacogdoches, of course, claims NINE flags here.... |
