Here is a little information about some of the remaining iron bridges in North Texas, the value of which as historical structures has come to be appreciated over the past decade of so. Several of the bridges seen in the online brochure, which was produced by the Denton County Historical Commission, have been 'adopted' and relocated by area communities and institutions .... or are awaiting that transition.

Several (I believe) of the early iron bridges in the state were constructed by the King Iron and Bridge Manufacturing Company of Cleveland, Ohio. After the turn of the twentieth century, the Austin Brothers Bridge Company of Dallas built numerous bridges in Texas. Following are a few links to short histories of these companies. If anyone knows more about them -- especially further insight concerning their workers and the means by which their designs and construction was contracted with cities, towns and counties -- the sharing of such would be most appreciated.

Here, also, is a photograph of a bridge with a mystery:

I think that this bridge no longer stands, but does anyone know for certain?

Trouble with the images; will try again, later.
