| ... or, 'Rodeo History 101.'
Is there a class taught in that somewhere? There should be. Why not? So much of Western heritage (and its myth) is contained in the rodeo.
Of course, an introduction may be had here:
http://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/RR/llr1.html
There is the Cowgirl Hall of Fame, in Fort Worth, to be visited:

Anyone been? I haven't yet, but hope to go this summer.
There is the Mesquite Championship Rodeo:
http://www.mesquiterodeo.com/
There was Texas Guinan, who left the rodeo for something 'more':
http://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/GG/fgu21.html
There were the traveling 'Wild West' shows .... Buffalo Bill's and Pawnee Bill's and those run by men of lesser renown .... but, there must be a great deal more to the bronc-riding and the trick-riding and the sharp-shooting .... the roping and the steer-wrestling, which have frightened and thrilled Texans ever since the office of 'vaquero' was secured proclaimed on the South-Texas Plains.
Tex Austin?

Oh, and the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Museum ... just across the Red:

Also, has anyone been to the Cattle Raisers Museum, in Fort Worth? It was closed for a time, I believe, and has experienced a name shift as well (Cattleman's --> Cattle Raiser's, or something like that). Slip on yer spurs, Geraldine Farraro

| | Speaking of Buffalo Bill, did you catch that biography on Annie Oakley? I think it was on the History Channel. |

| I missed that show. Was it well-done?
And I forgot about the Wise County Sheriff's Posse Rodeo -- held each September -- a long-ago anticipatory parade of which is seen here:

I love that lady's sky-blue dress ... the ocean-blue Impala ... and the gorgeous Palominos
I guess we'll never know for sure exactly how and where the little cadence, 'Eighter From Decatur' originated; some say Dallas was the spot ~ others, Fort Worth (which I favor). And some of us favor 'Ada (-er) From Decatur'

Here are some very nice history pages dealing with Decatur and Wise County .... one of which is sponsored by the Wise County Sheriff's Department:
