... that hold true.

Maybe we can approach the idea of a 'Texan identity' from a different angle.

I agree with outside observers that we Texans do speak a slow and ambling dialect of English (though we are not the only ones with twangs ~ listen to The King of Queens comedy TV show sometime .... though it may hurt silent ). We still don't like to be fenced in too much. We love our pickup trucks .... manned by our arms alone --> freedom and independence. Our rural folk of all ages prefer country-and-western music. Our men 'beyond city limits' still wear hats (or, caps ... as they technically may be more often these days). Yay Exclamation

Anything else ... anyone else?

Oh ... and more of our womenfolk may continue in the tradition (how old?) of having been called after their dads (or, 'just because'?) .... and thus, may be found sporting '-ette', '-ine' ('-ene') and '-elle' suffixes to their given names flower

Ha! I think most people in Texas follow the Hollywood styles today. But for a stereotype that's pretty true, we eat barbecue and Tex Mex and lots of heavy food, like chicken fried steaks with cream gravy. That's most of the stuff I try to stay away from on just eat on special occasions anymore.

My mom still has her accent or drawl or whatever. She thinks she's lost it but once a Texas always a Texan. Smile Plus she still has family in Texas and friends that she talks to on the phone about as much as anybody else. I'm not sure if any of her accent rubbed off on me. Dad's from AZ and we've lived Pheonix area and even in the midwest and CA, where I love now. Mom even had big hair when I was a kid, did the beauty shop thing.Smile

Why, thank you, Owl ... on behalf of legions of Texas women flower So, our beauty extends beyond myth ~ toward truth?

Re: beauticians in Texas history ... Gaston, I never had considered before the role which they have played in our local economies and social histories, but think about it: their influence, chronicled to any justice in our state (the cut-off date being the sprouting of the 'Fifth Avenue' salons and what-nots), would necessitate a huge volume.

Wonderful study project for the up-and-coming feminine (?) historian Cool

And concerning what it means to be a 'Texan': if I could ask anyone, it probably would be Jerry Jeff Walker. He has adopted the Lone Star and her traditions and done splendidly .... generously turning a mirror upon her folks in that becoming. Ultra-cool ... and thanks, Teacher sunny

Seems to me the 'Gypsy Songman' has found his rest:

We have relatively few vegetarians within our ranks.

Hail, beef Exclamation
